# Plan changes and billing

When plan changes take effect, how to add capacity, what happens when a payment fails, and how cancelling works.

Open **Account settings** from the left sidebar, then select [Billing & usage](https://app.checklyhq.com/settings/account/billing) to manage your plan and payment method. For prices and what each plan includes, see [pricing](https://www.checklyhq.com/pricing/). If your account is managed through the Vercel Marketplace, you change your plan on Vercel instead. See [Managing users and plans with Vercel](https://www.checklyhq.com/docs/integrations/ci-cd/vercel/managing-plan).

## When a plan change takes effect

Before you confirm a change, the checkout tells you when it applies:

- **Immediately**, if the new configuration costs more than your current one for the rest of the billing period. You’re charged the prorated difference right away, and any overages so far are included in the checkout. The checkout says “Your new subscription begins today.”

- **At the end of your current billing period**, otherwise, for example when you move to a smaller plan or lower an add-on. Until then, your account keeps its current configuration. The checkout shows the date the new plan takes effect.

The same applies to annual plans. If you’re on the Hobby plan or a trial, a new subscription starts immediately.
While a plan change is scheduled, you can’t make another change, and you can’t change or cancel the scheduled one from the app. Contact [support@checklyhq.com](mailto:support@checklyhq.com) if you need to.

## Adding capacity

There are no one-time purchases of check runs or credits. To get more uptime monitors or check runs, add them to your plan in the **Need more monitors?** section when you change your plan. Because that costs more, it takes effect immediately.
If you only need the extra capacity for a while, lower it again before your renewal date. Lowering it is scheduled for the end of the billing period, so you keep it until then.

## Paying

Self-serve plans are paid by credit card. You can update your card on the **Billing & usage** page.

## If a payment fails

If a subscription payment fails, Checkly retries it and emails your billing contacts and the account’s Owners and Admins. In the app, a banner says “There was a problem with your subscription payment” and shows the date your checks will stop running.
Update your payment method on the **Billing & usage** page before that date. Once you’ve updated it, you can select **retry the payment now** in the banner instead of waiting for the next automatic attempt. If the payment isn’t resolved, your checks stop running and the account moves to the Hobby plan.

## Cancelling

Cancelling a paid plan moves your account to the Hobby plan at the end of the billing period. Overages incurred until then are added to your next invoice.
To [delete your account](https://www.checklyhq.com/docs/admin/deleting-your-account), wait until it has moved to the Hobby plan: accounts on a paid plan can’t be deleted.
