Starting a new job is very exciting… and also nerve-wracking. Especially when you're joining a remote-first company and wondering:
- “Will I feel welcome?”
- “How do I meet people?”
- “Will I be left alone to figure things out?”
- “Will I just be staring at an empty Slack channel on my first day?”
We invest so much time, effort and money into hiring amazing people, so we can’t waste all of that effort with bad onboarding! That’s why we’ve designed onboarding at Checkly to be structured, supportive, and human.
💬 "Everything is clear and concise, I was able to get to a point where I could contribute to the team in less than a day. This was the smoothest onboarding I've ever gone through."
- Eddie, Backend Engineer
We’re proud to say that by continuously making improvements to this process, we’ve kept our onboarding satisfaction rate above 90%.
Here's how we help new team members land smoothly and confidently.
🎒Before Day 1: We’re getting everything ready for you
We start preparing for your arrival the moment you sign your contract. Before your first day, you’ll hear from us a few times to:
- Send you your laptop and some swag
- Get the admin out of the way so you can focus on settling in
- Introduce you to your onboarding buddy, who’s there to help with all your “how does this work?” questions
- Proactively answer FAQs like “When do I get access?” or “How do I come online?”
💬 "I really appreciated getting the email the week before I started laying out what the first day would look like, it made me much more confident for the first day."
- Lauren, Junior People Ops Manager
Behind the scenes, we’re also creating your very own Welcome Aboard Notion page. It includes:
- Your onboarding goals
- Key responsibilities and expectations
- A checklist of onboarding tasks for your first month, including prompts to help you connect with your teammates, first tasks from uploading your profile picture to your first real ticket, and links to key documentation
We believe transparency builds trust, and we want you to feel confident from the start.
📆 Day 1: You’re not alone
On the morning of your first day, you’ll get access to your Checkly Google account and our internal tools. Your first task will be to set up Slack, so you can say hi to the team 👋
In Slack you’ll find a warm welcome message with:
- General information about how we use Slack
- The link to your custom Welcome Aboard Notion page
- An overview of a few welcome meetings that are already set up for you to get connected and supported.
💬 "I appreciated the very detailed onboarding documentation and lots of guidance from my manager and the onboarding buddy. I'm very grateful for how smooth the onboarding process has been! From day one, my job responsibilities were clearly communicated, and I’ve felt welcome right away. Having clear weekly goals for the first month is helping me a lot to stay focused and organized.
The team has been super friendly, and everyone I’ve spoken with has been more than willing to help and answer any questions I had."
- Olesia, Operations Manager / Executive Assistant
🤝 Relationships matter… even more while remote
💬 "What I liked the most about the onboarding process is that we're encouraged to meet the team."
- María, Staff Product Manager
We know connection doesn’t happen automatically when you're working remotely. That’s why we intentionally design it into your onboarding experience. You’ll get:
- A dedicated onboarding buddy to guide and support you
- Regular 1:1s with your managers to check in, ask questions, get feedback and align on expectations
- Check-ins with the People team to make sure you’ve got what you need
- A couple of “connect with your teammates” tasks in your “Welcome Aboard” doc, because intentionally connecting with others is part of the job here
💬 "The emphasis on meeting with the co-founders and 6 colleagues is great! It was nice to meet my colleagues, especially since this doesn't always come naturally when working remotely."
- Chris, Senior Backend Engineer
Other ways we stay connected and build relationships that are not specific to onboarding are:
- In-person retreats two times per year
- Our $1,500 Learning, Visiting & Wellbeing Budget that can be used to travel to co-work with your team
- Weekly kick-off meeting with the whole company to align with and update each other
- A bunch of non-work-related channels in our Slack
- Team-specific rituals such as retros and unconferences
🚀 Onboarding that works
At Checkly, we believe onboarding isn’t only about learning systems and setting up tools. It’s also about helping people feel connected and confident from day one.
Take Manel, one of our Software Engineers. She and her husband both started new remote jobs on the same day. Different companies, same setup: working from home, fully remote, both in tech.
Her husband spent his first two weeks without tasks or meaningful interaction. Manel? She deployed her first changes to our codebase on her very first day at Checkly.
That’s what we mean by onboarding that works.
Whether you’re a Product Manager in Berlin, an Engineer in Buenos Aires, or an Account Executive in New York, you’re joining a team that truly cares about helping you thrive.
